When Councillor Angela Vithoulkas met with National Manager Jenny Stanger and learned about modern slavery happening in her own city, she took immediate steps to engage with City of Sydney on the actions they can take to end modern slavery. Councillor Vithoulkas has been a real champion for this issue in the city and as a result of her engagements with her city colleagues The Freedom Partnership is working with various different groups to educate and empower them with tools to take action.

The City of Sydney has been involved in:

  • Sponsoring and hosting training for 40 professionals including health and safety inspectors, overcrowded accommodation, homelessness and community services, and homelessness NGO partners to identify and respond to modern slavery in their environments
  • International Education Providers Forum, over 100 private and public education staff discussing issues related to the safety and well being of international students; including exploitation, mental health and accommodation

We look forward to continuing to engage with the City and welcome other council groups to get in touch with us on the ways you can slavery-proof your city.
